A kitchen trail can begin beyond the counter
In a Rocky Mount house with a porch or crawl space, the route to the kitchen may pass through more than one sheltered edge. Ants can follow utility openings, trim, and window frames toward food or moisture. Removing the insects on a counter addresses only the visible part of that route. A useful inspection follows the activity back toward accessible openings and the conditions around them.
Large ants and damp wood need a separate look
Carpenter ants excavate galleries for nesting; they do not eat wood as termites do. NC State notes the association between these ants and moisture in building materials. Around a leaking sill, softened porch framing, or a damp plumbing area, both the insects and the moisture source matter. Large size alone is not an identification, and an ant sighting does not establish the extent of any wood damage.
Colony control and prevention work together
An ant program may combine species-specific baiting or targeted treatment with attention to access and food sources. The choice depends on the ants and nesting conditions found. Broad spraying can change the visible trail without resolving the colony. For Rocky Mount homes, a lasting prevention discussion belongs around door fit, accessible pipe gaps, stored food, and moisture repairs as well as the place where ants first appeared.
